"Without change, there would be no butterflies”. This is one of my favorite quotations. It’s sure easy to say to a friend or colleague who is managing through change that it will all turn out OK. But let’s face it, change is hard, and, change is constant. We may long for the way things used to be, but life cannot stay the same. As humans, we like things the way they are. Many times we fear change - it is unknown, unproven, outside of our routine. It’s scary!

One model of change (that I remember from my Six Sigma training) is that there are four stages of change:  1. Current state: things are fine -> 2. Resistance: I don't want to change! -> 3. Confusion: Still thinking about the old, learning the new. ->4. New State: New change is even better than before!

Let’s think back on the butterfly – butterflies are beautiful, they are light, airy, free, delicate, and colorful. They went through a lot of change, and, they worked hard during their metamorphosis to turn into a butterfly!

The butterfly quotation changes the common negative perspective of change into a positive. It recognizes that change is difficult, and highlights that the outcome of change can be better than before. Being aware of what is going on is the first step to embrace change. Recognize what is happening, what you can control and what is out of your control. This can help you take charge to move in your desired direction.

What change are you dealing with right now? Recognize it, and recognize what is in your control. It could be your attitude about the change, your approach, or the actual direction of the change.

I hope this short journey provided a new perspective about change. What are you now aware of and what small step can you take to positively impact change? I would love to hear about it!
